A rain-affected qualifying session sees the McLaren Mercedes duo drop further down the grid than usual. Mika Hakkinen qualifies in a respectable third place, however David Coulthard is back in 14th position.

Hakkinen makes a quick start, battling with Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher for the lead, but Coulthard’s race looks like it is over when he has to pit after losing his nose cone in a collision, bringing out the safety car.

But after the restart, the Scot manages to carve his way through the field and by lap 16 has fought back up to seventh. He sets about closing the gap and overtakes Jean Alesi, Giancarlo Fisichella, Schumacher and Eddie Irvine on his way to a magnificent second place behind his team-mate
