'; ?> HAKKINEN BACK ON TOP

Starting second on the grid, Coulthard beats his polesitting team-mate to the La Source hairpin, and the pair get a little too close for comfort. It is a controversial overtaking move, considering an incident at the A1-Ring a month earlier when Coulthard had accidentally spun his team-mate off the track.

But with Hakkinen’s main title rival Eddie Irvine struggling back in fourth, the Finnish driver is content to keep his distance from Coulthard and settle for second.

The six points he gains from the team's second consecutive one-two finish are enough to leapfrog Irvine at the top of the driver standings, and put Hakkinen in pole position for a second world title.
