Just one second covers the top eight cars in qualifying, but Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard get off to good starts from first and third place respectively.

Hakkinen pulls out a lead on the Barcelona track and is able to rejoin the race ahead of his McLaren Mercedes team-mate after the first round of pit stops.

Behind them, championship leader Michael Schumacher goes on a late charge and cuts nine seconds from Hakkinen’s lead in as many laps. However, the German is unable to get past Coulthard, who keeps his cool amongst the backmarkers to seal another famous one-two finish for McLaren Mercedes.
