'; ?> HAKKINEN EXTENDS LEAD

A second successive one-two finish for Mika Hakkinen and David Coulthard, who qualify from the front row and run one-two all the way to the chequered flag. The only minor scare is when Hakkinen has to trim his pace in the closing laps as his engine starts to lose some of its oil.

Fans' favourite Michael Schumacher struggles in front of his home crowd, but more than 100,000 fans at Hockenheim cheer the success of the Mercedes-powered McLaren Mercedes cars.

It is the German engine supplier’s first home race victory since 1954, including the 30-year gap when Mercedes quit motorsport following a terrible accident at Le Mans in 1955. The win for Hakkinen extends his lead over title rival Schumacher to 16 points.
