VODAFONE McLAREN MERCEDES DOMINATE
Reigning world champion Jenson Button wins the race in Shanghai, followed by Lewis Hamilton, giving Vodafone McLaren Mercedes a richly deserved one-two finish.
It is also the first one-two by English drivers since Graham Hill and Piers Courage at the 1969 Monaco Grand Prix. And with Nico Rosberg coming third, it is the first time that Mercedes-powered cars have filled the podium since the 1955 British Grand Prix.
While some drivers stop and change to intermediate tires as the rain intensifies, Button – always comfortable in wet conditions – opts to stay out.
The heaviest of the rain holds off, though, and Button’s decision pays off – he charges past Rosberg into a lead he will not give up.
A few laps later, the safety car is called out for a second time and the field bunches up. However, Button expertly manages the pace of the race and finishes 1.53 seconds ahead of his team-mate Hamilton.
