'; ?> CHAOS ON THE STREETS OF MONACO

There is chaos at a rain-drenched Monaco, a race which sets a new record for the lowest number of cars ever to reach the finishing line.

As the two-hour race time limit comes into effect, only three cars – the Ligier of Olivier Panis, McLaren Mercedes’ David Coulthard and Sauber’s Johnny Herbert – are still on the track, the rest of the field having either spun off, collided or simply pulled into the pits in the wet conditions.

It is Panis’s first and only Grand Prix win, while Coulthard avoids the carnage all around him to finish second and secure six points for McLaren Mercedes, in what proves to be the team’s best result of the 1996 season.
