'; ?> HAMILTON EYES GLORY IN THE RAIN

Lewis Hamilton stands within touching distance of the world championship after an impressive win in the Japanese rain. With the start of the race taking place under a downpour, the first 19 laps are run behind the safety car.

When the racing begins, the two MP4-22s ease away, only for pitstops to place them right back in the traffic. Both Vodafone McLaren Mercedes drivers are involved in accidents with other cars – Fernando Alonso’s race ends when he slides into the tyre wall, but Hamilton recovers from his spin to lead the driver standings by 12 points.

With two races remaining, a world championship looks a real possibility in his debut season, but he eventually loses out to Kimi Raikkonen by the narrowest of margins.
