Vodafone McLaren Mercedes went through the 2006 season without recording a win, so a first victory in 18 months, courtesy of reigning world champion Fernando Alonso in the humidity of Sepang, is very welcome.
The win is made even sweeter when Lewis Hamilton crosses the line in second for the team’s first one-two finish since the Brazilian GP in 2005. Alonso overtakes polesitter Felipe Massa at turn one and dominates the race.
Behind him, the team’s pit strategy pays off, when a short middle stint gets Hamilton past Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen.
