'; ?> HOPE BLOSSOMS AT MONZA

A succession of retirements play into McLaren Mercedes’ hands at Monza as Mika Hakkinen scores his best-ever result, converting seventh place on the grid to second place on the podium at the Italian Grand Prix.

Taking advantage of drivers retiring from the race following collisions, spins and a variety of technical problems, Hakkinen finishes 18 seconds behind the Benetton of winner Johnny Herbert. His team-mate Mark Blundell starts from ninth and finishes fourth.

Coming during a season in which McLaren Mercedes struggles with its new chassis designs, these results give the team much encouragement, raising hopes that its drivers will soon be regular visitors to the podium.
