Ferrari’s Michael Schumacher must be sick of the sight of silver cars as yet again one of the McLaren Mercedes – this time Mika Hakkinen – gets past the German, who starts from pole.

Following his decisive move, a courageous, unexpected manoeuvre on lap 5 on the entry to Becketts, Hakkinen begins to pull away at a staggering rate of almost two seconds per lap.

The race order is mixed up only briefly during the pit stops, and Hakkinen goes on to claim a confidence-boosting first win of the season, 33 seconds ahead of Schumacher
