McLaren Mercedes make a fuel gamble at the A1-Ring, but it pays off when David Coulthard takes his second win of the season.
Starting from seventh place on the grid, the team starts Coulthard with a heavy fuel load to maximize his tactical options. In Brazil earlier in the season, the team gambled on rain, giving Coulthard wet weather tires while the rest of the grid chose slicks.
The high-risk strategy worked for the team then, and it pays off in Austria too, as Coulthard delivers a series of ultra-quick laps prior to his only pit stop, giving him a slim lead to cling on to. Despite having two Ferraris buzzing around his tail, he manages to hang on all the way to the checkered flag.
